ACL has full form ” Access Control List “. This is a list for any file, folder, or other object of the user permission. It decides which users and groups can access the object from the cone and perform the operation with the cone.

There are only three things in these operations which are to read, write, and execute. For example, if an ACL only specifies a file for read-only access, then that particular user can only open that file to read , but he cannot write anything to it and neither Can run the file.

Access Control List provides a very straightforward method for managing file and folder permissions. They are used in most operating systems , including Windows , Mac, and Unix systems. Where these ACLs are often hidden from the user but they can also be modified using a graphical interface.

For example, in Make Os X 10.5, you have to select a file or folder to edit the ACL settings and then you have to choose ” Get Info “. To modify the Windows access control settings, one has to go to the “Sharing and Permission” section. And a Unix system, you can use the chmod () command to edit the ACL .
