A cable modem is actually a peripheral device that is used to connect to the Internet.

It operates over the coax cable TV lines and also provides high-speed Internet access . Since cable modems offer always-on connection (24 × 7) and also fast data transfer rates, they are also called broadband devices.

Dial-up modems, which used to be very popular at a time when the Internet was launched, at that time she used to offer speeds that were around 56 Kbps through analog telephone lines. While DSL and cable modems later replaced them, they replaced dial-up modems and also offer much higher and faster speeds.

Earlier cable modems provided download and upload speeds of only 1 to 3 Mbps, which was about 20 to 60 times more than the fastest dial-up modems of the time.

In today’s time, there is also a standard cable that provides Internet access , its speed range is between 25 to 50 Mbps.

Most cable modems have a standard RJ45 port that connects with the Ethernet port to your computer or router.

Right now, in many homes you will find many such Internet-enabled devices , so now cable modems are typically connected with a home router, which allows the Internet to access multiple devices. At the same time, some cable modems have also started a built-in wireless router, so that you do not need another device on one side.

NOTE By the  way, the term ” modem ” is used in “cable modem” but it does not work like a traditional modem (which is short of Modulator / Demodulator ). Cable modems send and receive information digitally only, so there is no need to modulate an analog signal .
